Complex workplace relationships
Some organisations have a blend of private and government employees working side by side. While they aren’t technically colleagues, these working relationships can pose unique challenges for gender equality in daily workplace culture. It can be difficult to report or resolve any issues that arise, because reporting lines are blurred.
This was the case for the Veterinary Export Meat Branch of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. To take a proactive approach, Skye was brought in as a consultant to review the state of gender equality, and provide tailored strategic and practical recommendations
Deep consultation
In developing a gender equity review, Skye looked at areas including flexible work arrangements, pregnancy and breastfeeding, parental leave, change room and other facilities and specific issues to do with gender equity and diversity.
Skye consulted with around 100 government workers nationally, who shared their experiences and insights through group listening sessions, one-on-one discussions, phone calls and emails.
Gender equity action plan
The insights were shared in a comprehensive report, with actionable recommendations for gender equity in the workplace. She engaged with stakeholders at all levels to build a plan towards putting this work into action.
Through ongoing collaboration, the report is being adapted into strategic plans ready for implementation.
